EDI in Transport and Logistics

The transport and logistics sector is one of the 5 pillars of the French economy with more than 141,000 companies and nearly 670,000 workers. Having as its core business the management of goods flows, companies in the sector must also manage information flows associated with it, this is where Transport and Logistics EDI comes in.

Today, this market is not spared by digitization which aims to improve traceability, data exchange, collaboration between actors as well as interoperability through the use of EDI.

What’s EDI?

As a reminder, the acronym EDI stands for Electronic Data Interchange. Clearly, this corresponds to the automatic sending of information between two systems. The messages sent must comply with various norms and standards specific to the relevant activity area.

For example, EDI messages in the world of transport are produced by the GTF association (Group of Terrestrial Freight Forwarders) through the INOVERT standard (INternational OVERland Transport). These norms and standards are developed in collaboration with the major actors in Transport and Logistics.

Messages can be invoices, orders, shipping notices, delivery schedules, etc.

History of Transport EDI and Logistics EDI

Working in partnership with suppliers from Industry or Distribution, companies in the Transport and Logistics sector must implement EDI flows to support the uses of their customers and their major contractors.

The exploitation of these EDI flows aims to optimize the processes of all supply chains, this being reinforced by just-in-time manufacturing processes or also the rise of e-commerce.

But what are the real EDI needs in this market?

Needs in Transport EDI and Logistics EDI

As a company in this key sector, you need to automate your commercial, logistics and invoicing flows with your partners to improve your efficiency.

EDI allows you to:

  • Send out your movements and stock status
  • Process requests for orders preparation
  • Communicate on the evolution of orders processing
  • Process requests for logistics services
  • Process requests for goods transport
  • Send out shipping advices
  • Communicate on your shipment, transport and goods delivery status
  • Process your invoices in fiscal dematerialization

This is made possible thanks to the sending of EDI messages such as INVRPT, ORDERS, DESADV, DELFOR, IFCSUM, etc.

For example, the DESADV corresponds to the dispatch notice. This message contains all the information on the contents of the delivery. This allows the recipient to know precisely what he will receive thanks to the logistics label. This label is made up of 3 codes (EAN, SSCC and GLN) and it gives all the useful information on the goods sent, the partners involved and the shipment. This allows the optimization of the supply chain to increase efficiency.

Why switch to EDI?

First, it allows you to respond positively to EDI flows implementation requests from all of your partners.

Furthermore, you automate the processing of information in direct integration with your ERP /TMS-WMS. This allows you to reduce human processing and therefore limit the risk of errors. You improve the speed and reliability of your exchanges, which reduces processing costs and improves its security. Thus, you sustain and accelerate your growth.

Finally, the switch to EDI also allows you to dematerialize all of your invoices in order to comply with all tax and legal obligations.
